Staircase Calculator

Steps, riser height & run for any floor height.

About this calculator

A staircase that feels wrong almost always has bad proportions — risers too tall strain the knees, treads too shallow feel unsafe. Comfortable stairs follow a simple rule: riser around 7 inches and tread around 11 inches, with the total rise divided evenly. This calculator does that division for any floor height.

Whether you are guiding your mistri on a new house or checking an existing staircase, exact numbers prevent the most common construction mistake in Pakistani homes. Enter the floor-to-floor height and available run length to get step count, riser height and tread depth.

How to use

  1. Measure the total floor-to-floor height in inches or feet.
  2. Enter the horizontal space available for the staircase run.
  3. Get the number of steps, each riser’s height and tread depth.
  4. Share the numbers with your mistri before the shuttering goes up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal riser height for stairs?

Around 7 inches (17–18 cm) is the comfortable standard. Risers above 8 inches feel steep and tiring, especially for elders.

How deep should each step (tread) be?

About 10–11 inches of going gives secure footing. Shallower treads combined with tall risers make stairs feel like a ladder.

How many steps do I need for a 10-foot floor height?

A 10-foot (120-inch) rise at 7-inch risers needs about 17 steps. The calculator divides your exact height evenly so every step is identical.
